Not all hamsters are the same

Having a pet is a great responsibility but also a terrific idea to get rid of loneliness and actually have a purpose in life. If you’re a parent and want to teach your kid to have some responsibilities, you can buy them a pet, as long as you won’t mind still being the one who feeds it, walks it, and cleans after it.

Nevertheless, no matter the size and the breed of the animal you choose, they will always bring joy and laughter into a house. And, while dogs require plenty of walks outside and cats leave a lot of hair, you can start by adopting a smaller-sized animal, such as a hamster. So, here is everything you need to know about your furry fellows.

How many types of hamsters are there?

There are numerous subgroups and breeds of dwarf hamsters, but most of them derive from four large groups – the Siberian Hamster, the Russian Hamster, the Desert Hamster, and the Striped Hamster. The latter is the most common type you will usually find in pet stores.

Each of these hamster groups comes with its own characteristics, so it is important to know what to expect. For instance, the average lifespan of the Siberian and the Russian hamsters is approximately 1.5 years up to 2 years, while other hamster groups like the Striped one have a prolonged lifespan of approximately 3 years.

It is important to know what to expect, especially if you are planning on buying your kid a hamster. If your children get easily attached to animals, you should tell them from the beginning that their fellow companions won’t stick around forever.

How to look after a hamster

Each individual will require a permanent source of fresh water and food, as well as a comfortable environment to grow. Keep in mind that each hamster requires its own type of cage, crafted to fit their specific dimensions.

Thus, you will require special dwarf hamster cages for these individuals, complete with self-feeding and water systems. The cage should also come with a comfortable bedding. I recommend choosing cellulose instead of wood dust because the latter can still contain larger parts that can cut or harm your hamster.

What accessories should a hamster need?

Keep in mind that your dwarf hamster is a nocturnal creature, meaning it will mainly be active during the night. Thus, it should have a constant source of lighting and plenty of leisure activities to embrace.

A hamster wheel is the most common type of fun accessory that will keep your friend busy and in shape. Remember that hamsters have a tendency to overeat, so you must watch your pet’s diet and make sure he or she performs plenty physical activities to avoid overweight and obesity.
